Choose and Use an 8 AWG Car Audio and Video Ring Terminal
Whether you're pumping bass through your car on a joyride or listening to the radio while you take the kids to school, ring terminals are designed to help you achieve flawless audio fidelity. These devices conduct electricity, and there are many different styles from which to choose. To find 8 AWG ring terminals that are designed to boost the potential of your car audio or video setup, check out the options in this collection.
What types of ring terminals are out there? In order to satisfy the needs of every car owner, a few different types of ring terminals are manufactured. The point of connection on each terminal is slightly different, and there are other style variations as well. Four of the most common kinds of ring terminals include:
- Non-insulated: These kinds of ring terminals are bare copper connectors. They are crimped into place with a crimping tool.
- Booted: Since they have plastic boots at their extremities, these kinds of ring terminals provide a flush connection with wire insulation.
- Screw ring: These ring terminals have a central screw. This screw is used to secure these ring terminals to 8 AWG cable.
- Shrink band: These copper ring terminals are similar to their non-insulated counterparts, but they come equipped with a shrink band. This band is placed over both the terminal and the cable, and then a heat gun is applied to make a solid seal.
In the end, the type of ring terminal that is right for you boils down to personal preference. Some car audio enthusiasts prefer the solidity of screw ring terminals while others appreciate the simplicity of non-insulated terminals. The kinds of tools you have at your disposal will also make a difference in your decision-making process. Crimpers are required for most types of terminals, but screw rings only require a hex wrench.
How do you connect and crimp a booted terminal?By providing insulation without the need for a heat gun, booted terminals may offer two advantages. If you decide to try out booted terminals, you'll need to follow these steps to connect them to your 8 AWG wire:
- Step 1: Determine the length of wire that you will need, and separate it from the reel with wire cutters.
- Step 2: On both ends of the wire, strip about 1/4 inch of insulation with 8 AWG wire strippers.
- Step 3: Slip a booted terminal over one end of the wire, and use a crimper to secure it in place.
- Step 4: Repeat step three for the other end if you're adding terminals to both ends of the wire.
