Handheld Metal Detector
Every day, metal objects are dropped or become lost after being buried in the ground. A handheld metal detector can be used to find those objects without the need to do tons of digging. These devices can be used to find jewelry, coins, and any other item that may contain metal.
How do metal detectors work?Handheld metal detectors use a battery to create a penetrating magnetic field, which goes into the ground beneath the search coil. Any metal objects that are in the ground become charged by the magnetic field. The coil then detects the magnetized object and sends a signal to the control box, which alerts the user that an object has been detected. Depending on the type and sensitivity of the device, you may be able to pick up signals from object as deep as 12 inches below the surface. Some devices may even work at deeper levels.
What components make up a metal detector?Metal detectors are generally made up of four parts that all work together to help find coins or jewelry that might be buried in the ground. The four components include:
- Search coil: This component detects the metal objects that may be present in the ground directly beneath it.
- Control box: This component contains all of the controls, circuitry, a microprocessor, and the battery needed to run the device.
- Shaft: This long pole connects the coil to the control box. Some models are adjustable for your comfort.
- Stabilizer: This piece braces your arm so that you can sweep the coil back and forth while remaining steady.
When looking for a metal detector that meets your needs, you should consider:
- Objects of interest: Many devices are considered "all-purpose," which allows you to look for objects that may be made from a variety of different materials. This means that you may find anything from coins and jewelry to other relics that are made of metal. However, some devices are able to find signals from objects that are buried deeper than others. Further, those looking for gold may need a device with smaller coils or that works at a higher frequency.
- Detection areas: Handheld devices can be used almost anywhere, like parks, beaches, and fairgrounds. Some devices can even be used in the water, though you will need to ensure that the device was designed for fresh or salt water use.
- Experience: Most detection devices are designed to be used by beginners. Many feature automatic tuning that cancel out interference for you so that you can just enjoy the search.
- Time: Some devices are designed for heavy use while others are not. If you plan to spend much of your free time searching for buried objects, you may want a machine that is more rugged. If you only plan on doing this part-time as a fun activity, you may not need a machine that is built to withstand jolts and drops.
