Finding the Right Notebook That Runs on Windows XP

While operating systems continue to advance further and further, one is commonly remembered as a beloved and easy-to-use option: Windows XP. While laptops and netbooks are no longer made to ship with Windows XP, by choosing an older laptop, buyers can still get a laptop that natively uses Windows XP.

What Is the IBM ThinkPad?

Hearing "IBM" and "ThinkPad" together may confuse some buyers since Lenovo manufactures the ThinkPad today. This is because IBM originally manufactured the ThinkPad until Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad division in 2005.

  • This series of laptops has a minimalist design and were typically black and boxy. They were originally based on the concept of a traditional Japanese bento lunchbox.
  • The first ThinkPads released in 1992 and have certainly come a long way since their inception into the tech industry.
  • Starting in 2011, there are also ThinkPad Tablets on the market. These use a different operating system than both netbooks and notebooks.

What Are the Advantages of Windows XP?

Windows has seen a great number of operating systems over the years, some showing more promise than others. Fewer operating systems have seen as much favor as XP due to its innovative features and easy-to-use interface.

  • XP introduced many improved features from previous versions of Windows, like improved backup capabilities, on-board power management, and CD burning.
  • XP also has a clean interface. It introduced Windows Grouping, which allowed multiple windows from the same program to be grouped together for a cleaner interface.
  • Apart from the features of the operating system, some people just prefer the familiarity of XP. Many of the newer Windows versions, like Windows Vista and Windows 7, have changed many features, meaning there is a learning curve that may leave some wishing to stick with Windows XP.

Which ThinkPad Models Come with Windows XP?

For those who want to stick with Windows XP, there are many older ThinkPad models that natively run on Windows XP.

  • One option, the R31 2656 is a 14.1-inch laptop that has 256 MB of RAM, 40 GB of hard drive space, and uses the Pentium III processor.
  • Another option is the G40 2388. This option has similar specs to the previous model but has an upgraded Pentium 4 CPU that clocks in at 2.8 GHz.
  • For those who want a bit more power, the T42p 2373 is worth considering. This Windows XP laptop has 1 GB of RAM and a 60 GB hard drive, and uses a Pentium M processor.
