NEC RAM Upgrades to Improve Your Computer's Memory

Computing comes to a crashing halt when your computer can't keep up with tasks. To improve your personal computer's efficiency and speed, upgrading its random access memory may help. How Does RAM Work?

As you're completing computing tasks, your computer uses RAM to access memory cells holding stored data. These memory circuits hold single pieces of information used for routine computing. The memory constantly refreshes itself to keep track of data, which can slow down your computer. Moreover, some types of RAM process information in rows and columns, read and restore signals, and write new information into memory cells. All of this happens behind the scenes as you're opening files, writing emails, and viewing photos. 

How Do You Know When Your Computer Needs More RAM?

When your computer is agonizingly slow, bumping up the RAM may improve speed. You can double check how your computer performs by opening the task manager. From there, click on the performance tab to see the amount of RAM your computer is using. If available RAM is less than 25 percent, an upgrade may be in order. Additionally, you'll need to make sure there are empty RAM slots to add the type of random accessory memory suitable for your computer model. Aside from slowness, other signs pointing to a RAM upgrade include partial pages loading or the system freezes up frequently. When you have insufficient RAM, adding new software or using an outdated version of an operating system also contribute to slowing down your personal computer.

What Types of NEC RAM Are Available?

  • RDRAM: Developed during the late 1990s, Rambus DRAM moves data at the beginning and end of the processing cycle. Gamers use computers with this type of memory for video streaming. Since RDRAM has a higher bandwidth, data transfers faster. 
  • SGRAM: Synchronous Graphics RAM improves video memory since data is amended in a single operation versus sequence processing. This RAM is used with video cards to process images more efficiently, which is important to photographers and anyone who loads pictures frequently.
  • SDR SDRAM: Single Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM is designed to transfer data per clock cycles. Clock frequencies range from 100 to 133 MHz. This type of RAM accesses banks of information holding large volumes of data. Normally, you can multitask without experiencing delays.
