Nike Air Max 97 OG QS 2017 Silver Bullet

20 years old and better than ever...THE BEST design Nike has ever done!

Inspired by the lines of a Japanese Bullet train, 20 years ago designer Christian Tresser designed the PERFECT sneaker. My favorite for 20 years. I first saw these beauties reviewed with a full page photo in the then new (and coolest design magazine at the time) Wallpaper*, I knew I had to own a pair. And I did. And continued to own a pair, on and off, for years. Every now and again I do a Google shopping search to see if any of these are available for sale. For the last couple of years they've had very few pop up on the aftermarket, and never in my size (these run a half size small, btw). I happened to search in May and saw an article that Nike was reissuing this beauty for its 20th Anniversary and they would be available for $160 online and in stores starting April 13th of this year. Since I saw the article several weeks after the release date I knew I'd be out of luck getting my hands on a pair. Sold out on line and when I inquired in the NYC SoHo store the salesperson told me that they limited quantity they received were, unsurprisingly, gone in a matter of days. Today I see there are other colors - two black and two white/grey versions - available online, but not the original silver. So, knowing that I'd not likely get my hands on a pair in my size anytime soon I didn't have a problem paying $60 above retail. The prices of designer fashion (non-performance) sneakers in today's luxury market have gone insane. For as many $600+ (albeit, on sale) pairs of sneakers I've purchased in the last three years including Bally, Dsquared2, Ferragamo, Gucci, Hermès, Hogan, McQueen, Prada, etc. - none of them compare to these in terms of pure, excellent design. In the twenty years that have passed since coming on the market, there have, of course, been advances in technical design, especially in weight, resulting in a better, state of the art running shoe. In terms of sheer design aesthetic, however, nothing has ever topped this sneaker.
