Nissan Murano Oil Pans

Motor oil is the lifeblood of the engine in your Nissan Murano. If the oil pan develops a leak, the vehicle will eventually lose enough oil to ruin the engine. You can avoid this issue by replacing the pan at the first sign of a problem.

What is the function of the oil pan?

The oil pan has one job on every vehicle. It catches and stores the motor oil. When the SUV is running, oil is cycled from the oil pan to the cylinders to keep the pistons lubricated. When you turn off the engine, most of the oil drains into the pan. It’s kept clean and ready to go for the next time you start the engine.

If the oil pan leaks, the Murano will run low on oil. This causes the engine to overheat. If you don’t notice the problem and let the engine run out of oil, the parts will meld, and you’ll have to replace the engine.

What are the signs of a damaged oil pan?

Visible damage to the pan: If a rock or chunk of metal tears a hole in the oil pan, you can have a sudden, massive loss of oil. Scraping the bottom can weaken the pan, setting up a future leak. A badly rusted pan can allow oil to slowly ooze out. All of these types of damage can be seen by looking at the oil pan.

Oil on the driveway: It’s common for a vehicle to occasionally leave a couple of drops of oil on the driveway. If you start seeing a larger spot or a puddle of oil, this is a good sign that you have a more serious leak.

Leakage around the drain plug: You’re most likely to catch this when you’re changing the oil. There’s a gasket under the plug that can fail, or an aggressive mechanic may have stripped the threads.

Chronic low levels of oil: If the oil level in your Murano model is low every time you check it or the warning light on the dash keeps coming on, you probably have a leak. The oil pan is an easy first place to look.

What are the features of the Nissan Murano oil pan?

Oil pans are very simple parts. The Murano pan is black and typically made of steel. Some aftermarket parts are made of aluminum. They have a powder coating on the outside and a heavy, rust-resistant coating on the inside to help prevent corrosion.

The oil pan for the Murano is irregularly shaped and about 15 inches long. It holds 4.14 quarts. A new pan should include the drain plug, which has a 12 by 1.25 thread pattern.

How do you replace the oil pan on the Murano?
  • Drain all the oil from the vehicle.
  • Remove the 10 bolts holding the lower pan to the engine.
  • Gently pry or tap the pan loose.
  • Scrape the contact surface of the upper part of the pan to remove any residue.
  • Run a bead of RTV gasket maker around the rim of the new pan.
  • Install the new pan and tighten the bolts.
  • Refill the Murano with motor oil.
