Telugu DVDs and Blu-ray Discs

Telugu is a language originating from South India with more than 70 million speakers. Along with English and Hindi, it is a primary language across multiple Indian states. These DVD and Blu-ray discs are released in Telugu so that they can be viewed by speakers of the language.

What types of movies are available in Telugu?

The selection of Telugu-language discs consists mostly of local shows and films produced in the language, although foreign shows and films are sometimes included as well. Because so many people speak Telugu as a first language, the Indian region from which it originates has its own burgeoning film industry, which goes by the sobriquet "Tollywood." Telugu-language cinema produces hundreds of films per year, sometimes rivaling the prodigious output of Bollywood. Many of these films, from drama to action to comedy, are only available in their original language and therefore produced for that specific audience. It is not possible to view many of these films and TV shows anywhere except on the original Telugu-language discs.

Are foreign films dubbed or subbed into the Telugu language?

Yes, both English-language Hollywood films and Indian-language films voiced in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam are sometimes dubbed or subbed into Telugu. Dubbed means the dialogue is rerecorded by Telugu-language voice actors, replacing the original foreign-language dialogue. Subbed means the film or show keeps the original dialogue track, but translated subtitles are placed at the bottom of the screen to help the viewer follow along. Some of the most popular English-language films dubbed or subbed into the language include The Fast and the Furious, Alien and Transformers franchises, along with the Marvel comic films. Only a select few films are ever actually dubbed into the language. Instead, many of the discs released in India contain subtitle options for multiple Indian languages, of which Telugu may be one.

What is the significance of the DVD and Blu-ray regions?

Discs are sometimes encoded to fit a specific region so manufacturers can more easily control the distribution of their content. That means they will only play on compatible disc players: either a player from that region or one that is completely region-free. Some discs may also encompass multiple regions at once. DVDs and Blu-rays use entirely different regional systems. According to the DVD region-coding system, India is part of Region 5, along with most of Africa and south and central Asia. But according to the Blu-ray region-coding system, India is part of Region C, which encompasses most of south and central Asia, along with Russia and China. Many discs and players are region-free, but when ordering Telugu-language discs specifically, you should be aware of the region from which both the disc and the player originate to ensure that they are compatible with each other.
