MINI Cooper Window Motors and Parts

MINI Coopers are some of the more instantly recognizable cars on the road. There are some parts of the Cooper that play integral roles in your comfort when driving. One major component that makes your life easier is the power mechanism that allows the windows to be raised and lowered with the click of a button.

What are the parts of a MINI power window?

Though the system looks simple from the outside, the Coopers power window mechanism is hidden inside the frame of the door. There are four major components that make up this design, which is commonly known as the window regulator. The cable and gear regulator are two different types of window regulator.

  • Window motor: The motor is the most important part of the window regulator. This motor is triggered by a button or switch press and works the gears in order to raise and lower the system an appropriate amount. Replacements are also relatively easy to install as only a few wires need to be hooked up and the piece seated in place correctly.
  • Gears: The gears, which are powered by the motor, give the window regulator its speed and power. The size of the gear determines how fast the motor will raise and lower the glass. The average gear in MINIs is fairly average but will differ among models and trims. This means youll need to check your cars year and model to make sure youre getting the right replacement part.
  • Window switch: This small part is what allows you to control the windows. Pressing the button lets you activate the motor and turn the gears.
  • Cables: The other type of window regulator uses cables instead of gears to raise and lower the window. These are attached to a glass-holding bracket, which raises and lowers the system depending on which of the two cords is being pulled by the motor. These are very easy to repair.
Where are window motor parts located in the MINI?

As previously mentioned, all window regulator parts in the vehicle except for the button are located inside the doors of the MINI Cooper. This means that there are either two or four distinct regulators depending on the MINI Cooper model: one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side, or one by the drivers seat, one by the front passengers seat, and two in the back seats. Each of the window regulators in the MINI Cooper is constructed in the same manner, but you should be aware that the direction of some parts is flipped on the passenger side of the car to avoid frustration when replacing these parts.
